RC Celta De Vigo Vs. Getafe CF
Balaidos, 4th November 2024
Final Score: RC Celta De Vigo 1 - 0 Getafe CF
Bringing matchday 12 to a close was Celta Vigo hosting Getafe in the Monday kick off. In the wake of the DANA flooding in Valencia during the week, there was a moment of respect at the start of every match on matchday 12, a couple of the games were cancelled and rescheduled and there was differences with the players and coaches in the media on whether or not these games should go ahead. They served as a platform for the relief efforts with showings of supports and ways to donate for those viewing the matches at home and we wish all of those in the area the best and offer our sympathies to those effected.
Kick off goes and right off the bat we are greeted with a goal within 5 minutes. (Proved to be the only goal of the night...) Up until this point we noted that the game was pretty slow and uneventful for the opening 5 minutes. The goal was well worked though, the front two of Celta Vigo working well, Aspas managing to find some space and chip a deep cross into the box for Douvikas to get his head on at the back post and smash it past Soria in the Getafe goal, 1 - 0 to the hosts. The next 15 minutes or so were filled with little to no chances, this was the case for much of the first half as well - Getafe actually being the team to push the hardest but their efforts were seen away with in the box. Perez, actually on loan from Celta was lively in the first 25 minutes, making darting runs directly at the defensive line and pushing for the opening for the away side. What we noticed throughout this half was a real lack of quality in the final pass or the final shot, the movement was all there but the last action was what was letting both teams down. coming up the half hour mark, Aspas and Douvikas decided to start pushing for goal number 2, first was an Aspas ball through the line to Douvikas but Soria made himself big and smothered the ball, at the expense of a winding to himself. A minute later, Bamba plays a pass from deep to Douvikas to run against Nyom who has the ball ricochet off his leg and towards Soria, the Getafe keeper manages to keep the ball out of his own net for a potentially awkward own goal there. 5 minutes later Douvikas again gets the ball fed to him, he brings it down brilliantly and plays through to Mingueza who doesn't give up the run, bundling through players before getting a shot away that was only narrowly wide but the best chance since the goal there for the home side. Getafe then went at the last 10 minutes with a determination to score, Milla getting a good opportunity but it was rising too high to be on target and then Perez just before the half time whistle had an effort on the volley but once again, poor quality on the shot. The half time whistle goes and we were left wanting more from this one, the goalkeepers hadn't really been tested and the quality in front of goal was lacking, there were chances but no end product in any of them and we were hoping for better in the second half.
We start the second half and once again within 5 minutes, Perez cuts the ball back to Uche who saw his shot deflected, the ball lands with Alvaro but his effort is right at Guaita in the Celta net, the first real attack and shot on target from the away side. Bamba once again finds Aspas through on goal for Celta, this time he narrowly misses, hitting the base of the post as it goes wide, direct from the captain and the home side. Seconds later, Mingueza crosses into the 6 yard box for Douvikas but he can't get on to the header, this was two attacking chances in one minute for the hosts. The talking point of the second half so far came miuntes after this when the newly brought on Berrocal committed his second bookable offence which was a rash tackle on the half way line that didn't really need to be made. The referee didn't need to take a VAR look into it and brandished the second yellow and gave Berrocal his marching orders, now Getafe, the team with a poor scoring record, are 1 - 0 down and now a man down as well. Immediately, Aspas and co. started to take advantage of the extra man, Bamba plays Aspas through but Peter was on hand to defend well, on review - Aspas was offside in the build up and it wouldn't have counted anyway. Just before the 70 minute mark it was newly introduced Alvarez who was pushing the Celta front line forward, a mess of tackles and misplaced passes ends with him as he is 1 on 1 with Soria who forces the youngster to narrowly miss his shot. The next five minutes was all Celta (as expected at this point) - Aspas plays a lovely pass to Alvarez who does well to control but no one is there for the cutback, Iglesias then tries to send Aspas through but Soria manages to stay well placed to deal with the chipped effort and to round out this attacking play, Iglesias had the ball in the back of the net but was deemed offside. He had acres of space to run into but was offside in the build up. We're into the final 10 minutes, this time Rodriguez comes up to take a shot on goal for Celta, seems like every player in the home side wants a crack on goal here, but once again, the quality is poor from both sides. Last minute of the game and Getafe had a corner, they've been good at rescuing points at the death of matches, but in this case, they weren't able to continue that form. Being a man down for over half an hour by this point has clearly taken it's toll on the travelling players. That was it for full time, this is a shorter review as honestly, there wasn't much to talk about in this game, a proper hard fought mid table clash of two teams who needed the points to get some sort of form going. Getafe had a couple of chances but truthfully it was all Celta, after the first goal, they had the best chances, after the red card they were all over Getafe, was just a shame that the quality in the final third was really lacking in this game.
